NYC’s Central Park Tower Reaches New Heights in Luxury Living

New York City might have its most impressive line of condos on Billionaire’s Row, the glossy row of luxury towers on West 57th Street. But now one really stands out from the rest.

The Central Park Tower, which opened earlier this year, is “the tallest residential building in the world,” as it claims. The Extell Development Company built the tower, at 131 floors and 1,550 feet, as a residence of next-level luxury at 111 West 57th Street, which saw closings wrap up this winter for a $4B sellout.

As Gary Barnett, the founder and president of Extell explained, “This building stands out in New York City history as the singular residential offering that redefined luxury living.”

He added, “Central Park Tower introduces a level of design, quality and service that hasn’t been seen before.”

Extell co-developed the building with SMI USA, the American subsidiary of Shanghai Municipal Investment, which previously built the Shanghai Tower (the “second tallest building in the world”). Construction was managed by Lendlease, one of the world’s most prominent construction management firms.

No stranger to luxury, Extell is known for developing mixed-use properties in New York City, often those with commercial, retail and hospitality services. They’ve created the largest condo in lower Manhattan, One Manhattan Square, and are currently developing Brooklyn Point, which is slated to be the tallest building in Brooklyn once it’s completed (but another new condo tower, 9 DeKalb, is aiming to change that).

Extell has also updated a number of classic buildings in landmark neighborhoods, including the former Stanhope Hotel at 995 Fifth Avenue, and the Belnord, a landmark building on the Upper West Side (both have been turned into ultra luxe condos).

The company has tapped into the recent trend of resort-like amenities taking over at condos across the city — they offer five-star hotel life, basically. Even luxury hotels are jumping on Manhattan’s luxury condo market, like Mandarin Oriental and the Ritz-Carlton selling condos in New York City. More recent ones include the Towers of the Waldorf Astoria on Park Avenue, which is home to 375 residences that sell for $1.8 to $18.5M.

A spa, pool, restaurant, even a private member’s club, are key elements of this type of living, all of which you can get at Central Park Tower (the 100th floor private member’s club was designed by star designer Colin Cowie).

This project is next level when it comes to luxury. Starting on the 32nd floor, Central Park Tower is home to 179 residencies, from two bedrooms to eight-bedroom residencies. They’re no average New York shoebox, either. These condos range from 1,435 square feet to over 17,500 square feet and start at $6.5M. One three-bedroom residency on the 66th floor is going for $21.8m, which has interior design by Blainey North & Associates.

As far as the amenities go, the 14th floor has a residents’ lounge with billiards, a screening room and a 15,000-square-foot outdoor terrace. This mega-terrace has a 60-foot-long swimming pool, cabanas, a bar, a screening wall and dining services.

The amenity extravaganza continues on the 16th floor, where a health and wellness center has a 63-foot indoor swimming pool, a high-end fitness center, a basketball court, as well as a squash court, a sauna and a steam room. If that wasn’t enough, their private member’s club is hosted on the 100th floor, after a visit inside one of the building’s 11 elevators, which is high up at over 1,000 feet.

Barnett said Central Park Tower “has forever redefined luxury living,” and it’s clear to see why. “We would not be able to offer this level of design, quality and service without the contributions from the world’s most talented architects, engineers and designers.”

The design team includes New York-based Rottet Studio, who are renowned for their luxury hotel design, including the Surrey Hotel in New York City and the St. Regis hotel in Aspen. They handled the interior design for the units.

The building design is created by Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture, who are known for their energy-efficient design work (they’re currently working on responsible for the design of the next “world’s tallest building,” Jeddah Tower, which is now nearing completion in Saudi Arabia, overtaking Dubai’s Burj Khalifa).

“One of the greatest responsibilities of architecture is to continue to elevate experiences, yet create structures that are elegant and respectful,” said Gordon Gill, a partner with Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture. “Central Park Tower was designed to take advantage of the spirit of the great city of New York and create an address worthy of its location on Billionaires Row and Central Park.”

This building is more than just a luxury residence. It boasts a ground-level commercial space with a seven-story Nordstrom flagship store located at the foot of the building. It’s the largest project in the brand’s century-old history.

The flagship is open now, and aims to offer much more than your average department store, as shoppers can peruse over 320,000 square-feet of luxury brands like Saint Laurent and Fendi. This next-level retail experience certainly ties into the brand of the tower. It offers excellent service such as pickups for online orders with the option to try on garments and have them altered within 60 minutes, in case they don’t fit. There are also same-day deliveries, a “Stylist’s Lounge” for personalizing shopping with expert advice from Nordstrom’s stylist team, phone charging locations and even an upscale cafeteria with seven dining options, including Wolf, an Italian dinery, and a gluten-free donut shop called Oh Mochi.

The store design is a different project to the luxury residences above it, as the Nordstrom flagship features a façade designed by James Carpenter Design Associates. The aim is to allow maximum light in for shoppers, while displaying products to shine in the daylight. Unlike shopping on Amazon, for example, this flagship is designed with a sense of discovery, allowing customers to find new brands they typically wouldn’t scroll through.

Will Central Park Tower become a city landmark? That’s yet to be determined. The building is a modern type of glass structure, which isn’t exactly adventurous design, but aims for a simple elegance. It can be seen at night, when the top floors are lit up in white light.

Still, it has made history as the country’s most expensive condo tower. The building welcomed its first residents this spring, who now live in the building.

“Now that closings have commenced, residents will be able to experience the outstanding quality and unique lifestyle that is offered at Central Park Tower,” Barnett said. “With first-class products and exceptional pricing that speaks to today’s market, Central Park Tower is the very best you can buy on Central Park. There is truly no other building like it.”
